In our early years setting, we work hard to create “enabling environments” — places where children feel safe, supported, and inspired to learn. An enabling environment is more than just a tidy room or a set of toys; it’s a space that helps children explore, make choices, and grow at their own pace. We carefully organise our indoor and outdoor areas so children can move around freely and find activities that interest them. Resources are placed at child height so they can independently choose what they’d like to use, helping them develop confidence and independence. We also make sure the environment feels warm and welcoming. This includes having cosy areas for quiet time, spaces for imaginative play, and open areas where children can be active and creative. Staff work alongside children—supporting their play, encouraging language, and helping them build friendships. Outdoor learning is equally important. Our outdoor space gives children opportunities to experience nature, develop physical skills, and learn through hands‑on exploration. Overall, an enabling environment ensures every child feels included and able to learn in their own unique way. It supports curiosity, independence, and a love of learning from the very beginning.
